Ushuaia - the end of the world

We ended at the Refugio de Mochilero with Hector and his dog Piti. He is 50 years old guy working in a hostel. Not just his name but also his way of talking reminds us on the Hector from the movie The silence of the lambs. We still didn't figured out if he is genious or a bit insane, but he is definately the nicest guy we met till now in Argentina (maybe he still didn't show us the scary part :) - we are leaving tomorrow). He is true Argentino, born in Buenos Aires, studied medicine for 6 years (couldn't finish because of the revolution) and he ended up earning money as a tango teacher and hostel meneger. Now he is enjoing his life working in a reception helping mochileros (backpackers), drinking mate and thinking about recession, revolution and globalization. He really impressed us.

Although Ushuaia is the southernmost city in the world, it is a very lovely town surrounded by wonderful landscape. It is on Tierra del fuego (the land of fire) named after fires made by indegenous people that were seen by the sailors in the time of Magellan and Darwin.

As in the past also now it atracts people seeking adventures. A few decades ago when Jacques Cousteau was crousing through the Beagle chanel his son decided to live here. As Ushuaia is only 1000 km away from Antarctica it is the base of all expeditions to this unexplored white continent. Luckily or unfortunately last ship of this season for Antarctica left on the day that we arrived so we didn't have to decide if we want to spend 3000 EUR for 10 day trip. We'll keep this continent in mind for our next trip if it doesn't melt.
And for the very end of this post bed bugs do exist also at the end of the world!!
